Want to put some real Wisconsin snacks on the table during your party for the coming Super Bowl? We have a few tried-and-true recipes that you might enjoy. If you were visiting the folks here in Wittenberg, Wisconsin, it’s safe to say that this is a good sampling of what you would find on their tables come this Sunday… or at any northern Wisconsin potluck.
Ham Roll-Ups
By now, you’ve probably noticed that Wisconsinites put cheese in nearly every recipe that they can get their hands on. These easy hors d’oeuvres have only three ingredients and fulfill the Wisconsin Cheese requirement: Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Ham, cream cheese, and crunchy dill pickles.
Just take thin slices of ham and spread them with cream cheese (it helps if the cheese isn’t too cold) then place a nice, crispy dill pickle spear in the middle and roll the ham up around the pickle. Repeat this with as many slices as you like, then slice the rolls into inch-long pieces and secure with toothpicks. They’re ready to go and they go fast.
Rumaki
Pretty high on the flashback party food list, rumaki, or bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, is still on everyone’s party menu here. All you have to do to make them is fry up some of our bacon (we like Wild Cherrywood Smoked for this recipe) and wrap the slices around water chestnuts, securing with toothpicks. Drizzling some of your favorite savory sauce on these before serving works really well. The best one we’ve found is a raspberry chipotle sauce, but go ahead and experiment. Keep these a bit warm for serving… and enjoy.
Deviled Eggs with Bacon
If you have a favorite deviled egg recipe, we recommend adding some Applewood Smoked Bacon to it (and maybe some shredded super-sharp Cheddar cheese). That’s how we like ‘em here in Wittenberg. Finely dice some of our bacon and fry it until it’s just crisp and throw it into the mix for your deviled eggs. If you need a recipe to start with, here’s ours: Deviled Eggs with Applewood Smoked Bacon
